Endometriosis - Diagnosis and Treatment

 endometriosis pictures

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a female health disorder that occurs when cells from the lining of the womb (uterus) grow in other areas of the body. This can lead to pain, irregular bleeding, and problems getting pregnant (infertility).

Endometriosis is a condition in which cells that are normally found inside the uterus (endometrial cells) are found growing outside of the uterus. That is, the lining of the inside of the uterus is found outside of it. Endometrial cells are the cells that shed every month during menstruation, and so endometriosis is most likely to affect women during their childbearing years.

Causes of endometriosis:-

The cause of endometriosis is still unknown, and conventional treatments range from ineffective to surgical. But current research suggests that changes in diet and lifestyle can greatly reduce the symptoms and severity of the disease – while naturally improving the odds of conception.

Endometriosis is common. Sometimes, it may run in the family. Although endometriosis is typically diagnosed between ages 25 - 35, the condition probably begins about the time that regular menstruation begins.

A woman who has a mother or sister with endometriosis is much more likely to develop endometriosis than other women. You are more likely to develop endometriosis if you:

  1. Started your period at a young age
  2. Never had children
  3. Have frequent periods or they last 7 or more days
  4. Closed hymen, which blocks the flow of menstrual blood during the period

Symptoms:-

  1. Painful periods
  2. Pain in the pelvis, lower belly, rectum, vagina, or lower back. Pain may only occur at certain points in the menstrual cycle, during sex, during bowel movements, during ovulation, or all the time.
  3. Pelvic or low back pain that may occur at any time during the menstrual cycle
  4. Infertility
  5. Diarrhea and/or constipation

Diagnosis:-
Eliminate:

  1. Commercial meat & dairy: non-organic meat & dairy may contain hormones that mimic estrogen, and there is evidence that dioxins found in commercial animal foods can increase the likelihood and severity of endometriosis
  2. Alcohol: can exhibit estrogenic effects
  3. Sugar: can exhibit estrogenic effects
  4. Toxic personal care & cleaning products: can exhibit estrogenic effects
  5. Caffeine: consumption is directly correlated with incidence and severity of endometriosis
  6. Polyunsaturated cooking oils (canola, soy, safflower, corn, sunflower): can increase inflammation

Increase:

  1. Anti-inflammatory foods like non-GE salmon (omega-3’s), turmeric
  2. Fiber (plant-based diet): improves GI function
  3. Lipotropic (liver-supporting) foods: Onions, garlic, leeks, beets, broccoli, cabbage,    cauliflower, brussels sprouts, artichokes, bitter herbs like dandelion root, and milk    thistle: improve liver function
  4. Probiotic supplements: improve GI function
  5. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, real pickles and yogurt: improve GI function
  6. Exercise: can decrease estrogen levels

By following the above guidelines, women suffering from endometriosis can naturally reduce their symptoms and improve their fertility. A natural reproduction specialist or fertility prep program can help make these changes easy – and permanent.

Encourage Your Kids to Be Healthy

Many people struggle with being healthy. They wish they would have made exercise more important when they were younger, or that they didn't eat Twinkies all the time.

Sometimes these regrets apply to our kids; we wish we would have spent more time playing outside with them, or that we made them eat their vegetables. However, it's not too late to start living a healthy life, and to teach our kids to do so as well.

One great technique is getting your kids involved in sports. Many communities offer children's team sports and they often group the teams into neighborhoods. This is a great way to teach your kids that exercising can be fun, and they can make some new friends too.

You can also go walking as a family. This will allow your family to spend some time together, and your kids will see that you enjoy exercising too.

When kids think exercise is fun, that attitude can carry with them into adulthood. They will maintain their healthy habits! Getting your kids to participate in sports is an effective way to get them to exercise.

Another way to keep your kids healthy starts with your grocery shopping. When you go to the store, focus on healthy (but delicious) foods. Find out which healthy foods your kids like! Encouraging them to eat their favorite fruits and vegetables is a great way to promote good nutrition.

When kids are little and still trying out new foods, it's important to have them try as many veggies as they are able. Once they reach a certain age, kids assume the foods they haven't tried before are gross. Have them try a variety of healthy foods, like: broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, carrots, apples, berries and bananas. Focus on fresh foods that are rich in nutrients.

Kids are sometimes stubborn about what they eat though. If it looks gross to them, they aren't going to eat it. There are many fun ways to dress up their foods and make them more appetizing.

For example, you can get an apple peeler that peels and cuts it into swirls, or have your kids make faces on their plates with sliced veggies. Then you can laugh together as you are taking it apart and "eating the face". When taking a bite of a tomato, you can tease your kids and say "You're eating his eyes!". They will enjoy the food faces, and you'll enjoy good nutrition.

There are many more ways to encourage your kids to be healthy. Each child is different, so your methods of encouraging healthy habits should be tailored to their personality. Remember that your end goal is to encourage your kids to be healthy.

How to Restore Your Energy And Mood?

Do you ever feel completely depleted of all your energy? Do you feel like you cannot continue your daily tasks without taking a nap? Well, if you are like most of the entire world, you have both of these sensations happen to you. There are many different reasons why we lose energy throughout the day.

You may lose energy because you are not exercising regularly, eating enough nutrients, or sleep deprivation. When we feel a loss of energy, all we want to do to fix it is relax. Well, this is actually making your energy worse. The more you sit, the more tired we become. It's been shown in several studies that when we move around, even walk around the house, we are increasing our energy. Also, the more you move around, the more our bodies want to keep moving. So, all you have to do is find that first initial step of energy, and then our bodies will keep yearning for more.

There are many ways, besides exercise, to get more energy throughout the day. Here is a list of 10 different ways to feel more energy, and even boost your mood:

1. Eat Energizing Foods:

To prevent energy loss, you should try snacking on something throughout the entire day. Making yourself some kind of trail mix, or packing around a bag of almonds can really do the trick. Hunger can really put a damper on your mood.

2. Step Away From Electronics For A Moment:

Sitting in front of a computer or a television for hours has been shown to decrease levels of energy and mood dramatically. Try cutting back just a few hours and go outside, hang out with friends, or exercise.

3. Relax, Without the Laziness:

Instead of relaxing in front of the TV, try making yourself an energizing smoothie and taking 10 minutes out of your day to think about absolutely nothing. Meditating is another great way to revive your body, and increase your energy.

4. Compliment Someone - Honestly:

Any chance you get throughout the day to brighten someone else's day, do it. This will increase your mood right away. Of course, you should mean the compliment you say, rather than do it just to feel good about yourself.

5. Write Down Your Accomplishments Each Day:

Keeping track of your exercise goals and what you achieve every day can really affect your mood. If you spice up your treadmill workout, or go to a new yoga class, make sure to write it down and celebrate it! You will increase your mood tremendously.

6. Listen to Music:

In the middle of the day when you are feeling down in the dumps, put on your favorite playlist and just listen to the music and get lost in it. To double this energy treatment, try running while listening to your favorite music.

7. Wear Bright Colors:

You can prevent a bad mood just by the outfit you wear that day. If you are feeling glum in the morning, just throw on a bright yellow shirt and I promise it will make your day brighter and happier. You will also feel more energy from it.

8. Sit In The Sun:

The sun is a natural remedy for our mood and energy. Most people in the world are deficient on Vitamin D, which comes from the sun. Without this vitamin, you can feel a loss of energy, and just plain depressed. Try sitting out in the sun for 20 minutes a day and you will boost your mood and energy.

9. Stretch Your Body:

If your body feels exhausted from sitting at a desk all day, try getting up every once in a while and doing a little stretch to wake your body up. Your body will feel amazing after and thank you for it.

10. Stop Stressing:

You cannot believe the incredible health benefits that you can receive from freeing your body of stress. Not only is it healthy, but it will increase your mood and your energy! One way to feel less stress instantly is by smelling an orange. According to a study, the citrus contains linalool, which has been shown to lower stress levels.

Causes of Anxiety

What's making you so anxious? You may be surprised — from certain medications to problems with your thyroid, watch out for these anxiety triggers.

1. Personality factors

Some research suggests that people with certain personality traits are more likely to have anxiety. For example, children who are perfectionists, easily flustered, lack self-esteem or want to control everything, sometimes develop anxiety during childhood or as adults.

Everyone is different and it's often a combination of factors that can contribute to a person developing anxiety. It's important to note that you can't always identify the cause of it or change difficult circumstances.
The most important thing is to recognize the signs and symptoms of anxiety and to seek help. The sooner you seek help, the sooner you can recover.

2. Physical health problems

Continuing physical illness can also trigger anxiety or complicate the treatment of either the anxiety or the physical illness itself. Common conditions that can do this include:

hormonal problems (e.g. overactive thyroid)
diabetes
asthma
heart disease

If there is concern about any of these conditions, ask a doctor for medical tests to rule out a medical cause for the feelings of anxiety.

3. Ongoing stressful events

Stressful events can also trigger symptoms of anxiety. Common triggers include:

job stress or job change
change in living arrangements
pregnancy and giving birth
family and relationship problems
major emotional shock following a stressful or traumatic event
verbal, sexual, physical or emotional abuse or trauma
death or loss of a loved one.

4. Caffeine

Caffeine is a stimulant — and that can be bad news for someone with anxiety. In fact, caffeine’s jittery effects on your body are similar to those of a frightening event. That's because caffeine stimulates your "fight or flight" response, and studies show that this can make anxiety worse and can even trigger an anxiety attack. And just like the symptoms of anxiety, consuming one too many cups of Joe may leave you feeling nervous, moody, and can keep you up all night.

5. Weight Loss Supplements

Many over-the-counter (OTC) weight loss supplements come with anxiety-producing side effects. Saint John's wort side effects may include insomnia, and green tea extracts (which claim to suppress appetite) contain plenty of caffeine. Guarana is an ingredient in some OTC diet products that contains twice as much caffeine as regular coffee. And watch out for any product containing ephedra — it can lead to increased heart rate and anxiety.

6. Traumatic Events

Traumatic events are caused by certain accidents and incidents. These can be cured by the help of medical professionals and support groups.

7. Unhealthy Lifestyle

Drinking, smoking, drugs, and junk food contribute to stress. To counterattack the effects of these, you know what to do: Live a healthier and better life. Know how to handle the sources and you'll discover how to handle the stress.

8. Cigarettes, drugs and alcohol

Relying on smoking, drinking or using drugs to feel calmer can backfire. Nicotine is a stimulant that studies have shown can raise blood pressure and heart rate. In addition, the carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke also may cause breathing problems that the body responds to as if it's suffocating, increasing the likelihood of panic attacks. As for alcohol and drugs, people suffering from an anxiety disorder are two to three times more likely to abuse these than the general population, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Both alcohol and drugs can lead to panic attacks and their disruptive effect on the central nervous system limits the brain's ability to calm the mind and body.

9. Age

As we age, we face multiple stresses that can bring on bouts of anxiety. Life events such as health changes, memory problems, the death of a spouse or even a seemingly happy change like retirement, can all be stress-provoking. The Geriatric Mental Health Foundation estimates that 10-to-20 percent of older adults suffer from anxiety, although many go untreated because they may not recognize the symptoms.

10. Negative thinking

Many therapists stress that persistent negative thinking really does have a harmful effect on our emotional well-being. Ever hear of automatic negative thoughts (or ANT’s)? These are quick, unconscious, off-the-cuff criticisms that the mind churns out when faced with stressful situations. "Why did I do that?" "Why am I so dumb?" and other negative self-criticisms wreak havoc on your emotional state. The good news is that a therapist can help you identify these ANT’s and reduce the power they have on your psyche.
